Click through the slides for a reminder and explanation of how to form the perfect tense in German. We use the perfect tense to talk about the past.
To make sure you stay accurate in your speaking and writing, use the acronym SHIP.
S - subject
H - helping verb
I - information (time, manner, place)
P - Past participle
Then scroll down.
2. In this section, we will focus on S - S stands for subject.
The subject pronouns in German are:
ich
du
er/ sie/ es
wir
ihr
sie/Sie
When you have completed the matching activity, scroll down to focus on the next element.
3. Next we will focus on H. H stands for helping verbs. There are two possibilities - haben or sein. We need to conjugate (change) haben or sein to match the subject. First, test yourself on the conjugations of haben and sein using the flashcards. Then, complete the task to check that you have memorised both verbs successfully.
4. Next is I which stands for information. To use correct word order in German, you should try to remember time, manner, place or TMP. Sort the words below into the correct category.
5. The final element of SHIP is P which stands for past participle. Download the list and learn the past participles. If a verb has * next to it, it means that we need to use sein instead of haben. Then complete the past participle quiz.
6. Now decide if the past participles here take haben or sein.
7. Let's put it all together with some complex sentences.
Our basic rule is SHIP - but if we start with a time frame, the order is HSIP (this is because of the verb second rule)
Here's an example:
Letzte Woche bin ich mit meinem Bruder in den Park gegangen.
Ich bin letzte Woche mit meinem Bruder in den Park gegangen.
(Notice that H is in second position in both of these sentences)
Drag the words to put the sentences into the correct order.
